Hypothyroidism, Leptin & the Weight Loss Lie

That No One Talks About:

Ange Nilsson 26 aug 2025.

My journey with hypothyroidism has been anything but typical—and yet, it’s probably exactly like yours if you’re reading this.

After maintaining a healthy 63 kg for over two decades through clean eating, regular movement, and simply knowing and listening to my body—I was hit with a storm I never saw coming.

In just three months, I shot up to 85 kg. That’s 22 kg gained in a heartbeat. Then the brutal cycle began: yo-yoing between weight gain and loss, adding another 13 kg at my heaviest. ALMOST 100KG!

And the worst part? I was eating less than 950 calories per day for nearly ten years after the thyroidectemy. Told by Doctors I need to move more! Told by dietitians my body is in “Starvation MODE!” Holding onto every calorie and storing them as fat unless i started eating 3 -6 meals a day with double the calories! Which pounded on the weight even more!

the weight wouldnt budge

This wasn’t just about weight. It was about betrayal. My own body —despite my best efforts— my body refused to respond. The doctors told me it was “just hormones.” That my thyroid had been removed. That I was on replacement thyroid meds. That things should be fine.

But they weren’t I was almost 100kg and 165cm tall. i was too big for my bone structure!

Like the rest of us, I was trapped in a toxic modern environment:

  • Where “health” foods are riddled with hidden sugars, xenoestrogens, industrial oils, and hormone-disrupting preservatives.
  • Where artificial “diet” solutions only dig us deeper into hormonal chaos.
  • Where brain fog, fatigue, and weight gain are dismissed as “normal.” and made “NORMAL” by the extreme left “BODY Positivity movement that became a toxic rant for any one who was morbidly obese and was probably in the same boat with me. We had no answers so many others gave up.

But during my recovery journey post-thyroidectomy, my first 6 months into my Chinese herbalismI journey I started digging around and stumbled onto something that no one was talking about. Something we aren’t being told!

AND has been found to be the cause of the subsiquential weight gain, brain fog and lethargy!

🧠SO…..What is Leptin?

Leptin is a hormone secreted primarily by fat cells in our bodies that tells our brain we’re full.

It also plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy balance, and fat storage.

In healthy individuals, leptin works like a thermostat, (with hypothyroidism we have NO THERMOSTAT!) signaling the brain to burn calories or store them depending on the body’s needs.

THe hotter the body the more energy it burns! the body is at a lower temperateure when leptin production is low!

What the True Science Says that our doctors aren’t telling us!

Recent studies reveal a complex relationship between leptin and thyroid function:

BIO MED CENTRALs’ study/paper: “Congenitle Leptin Deficiency and Thyroid Function” NOV 4th 2009 shared a study that revealed the following:

“Thyroid Function is closely related to Leptin Secretion of adipose tissue”

(low functioning thyroid = low leptins, there for the metabolism slows, fat is quickly stored! High functioning thyroid = high leptin secretion is higher hense fat burns rapidly and uncontrollably/ can’t gain weight!)

“In animal models, leptin deficiency disrupted the normal circadian rhythm of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), contributing to a central hypothyroid state.” Thus creating “BRAIN FOG”
Leptin and the hypothalamo–pituitary–thyroid axis, Thyroid Research Journal

Studies also showed: “Patients with primary hypothyroidism had a significantly lower plasma leptin concentrations before and after treatment with levothyroxine.”

This means that those with hypothyroidism may not only have low metabolism due to low T3/T4 levels, but may also having extremely reduced leptin signaling and extremely low Leptin levels, making it harder to think clearly, feel full and burn fat efficiently.

🌿 What We’re Doing About It At Sophic Wellness!

In our herbal emporium, we’re currently researching natural ways to support leptin production and sensitivity, especially in people with:

  • Low thyroid function
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • Unexplained weight gain despite dieting

Early trials suggest certain herbal teas—featuring cinnamon, fenugreek, ginger, and a few others—may gently stimulate metabolism and support leptin pathways without harsh stimulants like the artificially sythesiced thyroid medications, Ozempic, or Wegovy!.

💌 Want to Be a Part of Our Herbal Leptin Trial?

We’re working on a new tea blend designed to naturally support those with:

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Slow metabolism
  • Low leptin levels

If you’re interested in trialling our upcoming herbal tea blend, contact our shop and put your name down for a free trial pack.

We’re looking for thoughtful testers who can share feedback and results over a few weeks.

📩Science is catching up to what many with thyroid issues have known for years—

Many of us know that a new drug for diebetics and weight loss are on the market… yep Ozemptic and wegovy

BUT

DID YOU KNOW THAT WEGOVY AND OZEMPIC BOOST YOUR LECTIN LEVELS?

WHY ARE HYPOTHYROID MEN AND WOMEN NOT BEING PRESCRIBED THIS AS A PART OF THEIR REGIME?

Really, it’s now been proven, it’s not just about calories in and out. YOU”RE NOT LAZY!!! Hormones like leptin are at the center of metabolism and fat storage.

And supporting them naturally may be the missing link to a century old problem.
